There are also a ton of benefits for the mother!

Okay, so now that we have covered the general benefits of breastfeeding, what is all this about breastfeeding making your baby smarter!?

This study published in the US National Library of Medicine shows a correlation between breastfeeding and “higher scores on test of neurodevelopment and cognition later in life“. It shows that breastfeeding can raise a child’s IQ by as much as 5 points. In general, however, children who are breastfed have an 8.3 IQ point advantage over children who aren’t breastfed. That is pretty significant!

The reason behind this is the development of brain volume and white matter (brain tissues that effect learning ability and cognition). There is a positive correlation between consuming breast milk in infancy and brain volume later in life. There is also a positive correlation between brain volume and IQ. Generally, a larger brain volume comes with a higher IQ, thus showing the correlation between breastfeeding and IQ!

Keep in mind, however, that there are limitations to this study. It is important to note other factors like maternal education level, socioeconomic class, and child-rearing preferences have an impact of a women’s choice to breastfeed as well cognitive development. This means that we cannot be absolutely 100% sure that these results (a higher IQ, that is) are solely connected to breastfeeding!

Regardless, increased IQ is just one of the many many benefits to breastfeeding your child. Also, it is important to remember that the choice to breastfeed is a very personal choice and you should make sure you choose what is best for YOU and YOUR BABY! Not for anybody else! I just hope to provide you with a little bit more information so you can make your decision that much more informed 😉

Till next time ladies!!!
