40 Weeks now what? What to Do when your Overdue!

So 40 long weeks of pregnancy have come and gone, and still, no baby! Today is my due date and there is absolutely no baby in site! Despite eating my dates like crazy and trying all of these natural induction methods, this overdue baby still hasn’t come.

Today Daniel and I had a little due date celebration in honor of my due date. We got some cakes from a little bakery in town and drank these pumpkin spice lattes from Brittany over at Eating Bird Food! It was a perfect way to get my mind off of the fact that I am still pregnant! Due Date Celebration, overdue baby

I never thought I would go past my due date, but maybe all pregnant women think that. I thought without a doubt that this baby would be early. Maybe that was more wishful thinking! So now that I am officially overdue, I am trying to figure out what to do! 😉

1. Relax

Easier said than done right. Especially when all you want is a big glass of wine! But the baby isn’t going to come any sooner by worrying about it. The baby will come when its ready. Remember, there is nothing wrong with the baby being a little overdue. The calculated due date is simply the median of when women have their babies. This means that about 50% of women have their babies after their calculated due dates. Also, only about 5% of women have their babies on their actual due dates. Fun Fact: The average length of pregnancy is actually 39 weeks and 5 days, slightly shorter than the median!

I told my mom yesterday that I thought I would be pregnant forever. She told me that no women in history has ever been pregnant forever. This is true, the baby will eventually come out. So give yourself a break, and RELAX!!

My sister-in-law sent me this Meme the other day!

So True!!

2. Natural Induction

Try these 11 Natural Induction Techniques to help get labor moving along. I have been going on long walks everyday, and Daniel has been massaging my feet trying to press on some labor pressure points. Still Nothing. I think i’m going to have to up my game and bring out the Castor Oil!

3. Do Something

Do something to get your mind off of the fact that you are still pregnant! Take a look at these 10 tips to survive the last few weeks of pregnancy (aka ways to not go INSANE)! Personally, I have been working on my blog trying to prepare some things for when I am MIA when the baby comes. I have also been in a baking mood, especially since its pumpkin season. 😉

Today I made these Healthy Pumpkin Muffins from Cookie+Kate. I plan on freezing them and saving them for when little Fé finally decides to make an appearance!

4. Talk to your doctor or midwife

Remember, continue to go to your scheduled appointments as normal. Most practitioners wont even think about medical intervention until you are past 41 weeks as it is totally normal to be overdue. Also, your due date could have been calculated wrong. There is no ABSOLUTE way of knowing exactly when you conceived or ovulated and while its pretty accurate these days, it can still be off by a couple of days or even up to a week. (Sorry, you probably don’t want to hear that)

My due date changed a bunch of times throughout my pregnancy. So while today is my official due date according to my midwife, we have also heard a couple of different dates.

Overdue Baby5. Talk about Induction

If you go past 41 weeks, your doctor or midwife may suggest medical induction. They may also suggest induction if:

  • you are suffering from Preeclampsia or other pregnancy complications
  • they suspect fetal distress
  • if your water has broken and you don’t feel any contractions
  • if your water breaks and it is green or brown, suggesting the baby has had its first bowel movements

There are a few common ways of inducing labor.

  1. Stripping of Membranes: In this method, the doctor may artificially rupture your amniotic sac to release the hormone called Prostaglandin, which signals the body to start contracting.
  2. Artificial Oxytocin: If Stripping the Membranes doesn’t work, the doctor may hook you up to an IV with artificial Oxytocin (Pitocin or Syntocinon) to signal to the body to start contracting.
Remember to keep your eye out for these early signs of labor!

6. Past 42 weeks?

If you go past 42 weeks, the baby is considered Post-Term and can pose some health risks for both you and the baby.

  • The baby may become too large (resulting in a C-section),
  • The baby may have breathing problems
  • There may be a drop in amniotic fluid which poses a risk to the baby
  • They are more likely to have their first bowel movement and potentially breath it in
  • Higher risk of Placental failure

At this point, if other induction methods don’t work, your doctor may consider a Cesarean Section.

If you read my post about deciding to have a natural childbirth  you are aware that I am trying to avoid medical intervention as much as possible. Thats why I really hope that these natural induction methods work, or that I go into labor sooner rather than later! Wish me luck, and to all you other overdue mamas, I wish you the bast of luck as well!

Remember to look out for these early labor signs 😉

Happy Pregnancies!
