Top 10 Pregnancy Essentials

When I first found out I was pregnant Daniel and I were on a pretty tight budget. I had just moved to The Netherlands and I was still waiting to see if my Visa was going to get accepted. This meant, I wasn’t working at the time, and Daniel was still finishing his Masters Degree! So we were two young people on one student income. Money was pretty tight!

Understandably, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on my pregnancy, especially since we were preparing for our baby on such a small budget. Regardless, there were some Pregnancy items that I found to be absolutely essential to make it through those 40 long weeks.

So here is my list of top 10 Pregnancy Essentials!Top 10 Pregnancy Essentials

1. Prenatal Vitamin

Vitamin Code Prenatal VitaminWhile a prenatal vitamin cannot overcome a poor pregnancy diet, it is essential to making sure you receive all the proper nutrients and vitamins for yourself and your growing baby. Make sure to read up on proper pregnancy nutrition to ensure you are maintaining a healthy pregnancy diet. =)

Also, the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, make sure you are getting enough Folic Acid to ensure proper spinal cord development in your fetus. Either choose a prenatal vitamin with Folic Acid, or take an additional supplement.

Try MegaFood Prenatal & Postnatal Support or  Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal for two of the best prenatal vitamins according to studies done by Labdoor.

2. Pregnancy Books

I wouldn’t have been able to survive my whole pregnancy without these two great books from the What to Expect Series! My mother-in-law sent them to me early on in my pregnancy and they have been my pregnancy bibles ever since.

I seriously recommend investing in What to Expect When You’re Expecting and What to Expect: Eating Well When You’re Expecting. They have been the two most useful items of my whole pregnancy!

3. Pregnancy Tea

Morning sickness got you down? Morning sickness can be pretty rough and can really impact your quality of life for the first few months of pregnancy. Try sipping on this Morning Wellness Tea from Earth Mama to help calm your queasy stomach. You can also try sipping on lemon water or sucking on peppermint candies throughout the day.

During my first trimester, I didn’t suffer from horrible morning sickness, but I kept some dry crackers and Gatorade right next to my bed to eat first thing in the morning before getting up. This really helped fight off morning sickness for most of my pregnancy.

4. Bra Extenders

While you may eventually need to buy bigger bras as your breasts grow, you can still get as much use out of your current bras as possible by using bra extenders. If you are on a tight budget (like I was) try holding off on buying a bunch of new bras till later in your pregnancy because your boobies will keep growing and growing! Try these Maidenform Bra Extenders to make your bras last as long as possible.

5. Water Bottle

It is absolutely essential to make sure you drink enough water throughout your pregnancy. Invest in a good quality water bottle so you always have access to water wherever you go. My absolute favorite water bottle is my Nalgene BPA Free Water Bottle. I make sure to drink two full bottles a day and then I have already reached my water consumption goal =)

6. Stretch Mark Oil

As much as I hate to admit it, you will probably get some stretch marks during your pregnancy. =( You can try to prevent them by gaining weight slowly throughout your pregnancy and also by applying anti-stretch mark oil.

My friend sent me this Bio-Oil Multi-use Skincare Oil and I think it has been a lifesaver! If I hadn’t used it I think my stretch marks would be much much worse.

Another great stretch mark cream is Mama Bee Belly Butter by Burts Bees with all natural ingredients.

7. Maternity Jeans

As your belly expands, you may find that you don’t fit into your old jeans anymore. I invested in two good pairs of maternity jeans from H&M and they were the best investments of my whole pregnancy. I pretty much wear them every single day, and they still fit even though I am currently 39 weeks pregnant.

8. Maternity Pillow

If you are having some common pregnancy sleep problems due to your growing belly it may be hard to get comfortable in bed. I recommend investing in a special maternity pillow designed to make you comfortable regardless of how big your belly is. This Leachco Snoogle Total Body Pillow can be a total lifesaver for when you just cant seem to get comfy during your final months of pregnancy.

9. Maternity Support Belt

Pregnancy can really take its toll on your body! Your ever expanding belly can lead to poor posture which cause a series of pains all over! To combat this, there are a ton of special maternity support belts on the market these days to help provide much needed support to your belly, back, and hips throughout our pregnancy. These can be especially useful in your third trimester when pregnancy aches and pains can be unbearable.

Blanqi Maternity Support Tank Top

You can find many different styles that fit various needs. They have belts with minimal support or more structured belts that provide much more support for your back. They also have special belts that help support your hips and growing pelvis.

It’s You Baby, Prenatal Cradle

For a belt with minimal support try the Blanqi Maternity Support Tank Top. It provides light support to your belly and back and is also a great piece for laying other tops over.

For more support try the It’s You Babe Prenatal Cradle. It may look a little intimidating at first, but it provides some serious support and comfort for your growing belly, aching back, and expanding hips.

10. Comfortable Supportive Shoes

While we all love wearing our heels, it may not be practical come 30 weeks pregnant. Your swollen feet need some serious support if you do a lot of walking (more like waddling) or standing on a daily basis. During the summer I lived in my Birkenstock Sandals. They are so comfortable and the cork sole molds to your feet to provide support and comfort for even the most swollen pregnancy feet.

For closed toe shoes the Reebok Skyscape Runaround sneakers are super comfy! I also love my Toms slip on shoes =)
